Braces & Retainers, Before & After

I had my braces when I was 18, in  September 2009. Before I had my braces, my teeth were very messy and misaligned, and it looks crooked when I smile. Moreover, I couldn't brush properly which caused me gum swelling problems.

This was in December 2008.

Before I had my braces, I had to do some scaling to remove all the plaque and improve my gums condition. The gums had to be strong and healthy before having on braces so that the teeth can adjust properly.

September 2009. 2 weeks after having my braces.

The braces don't look nice and straight at first. The brackets are fixed at the centre of each tooth, so its crooked and ugly at first. When they are first fixed, the metal brackets also cut the inner parts of my lips. My dentist gave me some wax to be applied on the sharp metal parts to stop it from cutting.

The most troublesome thing when having braces is to clean after eating. It feels very uncomfortable when there's food stuck in between the braces. It's also embarrassing to have food stuck in the middle of your teeth when you smile. The only way to remove it is by using small dental brushes. It's very important to keep the brace clean or else you might have bad breath or even food stains on the braces. I had once fixed the transparent rubber, and it became a yellowish stain because I ate curry.

Coloured braces.
I have the upper and bottom teeth braced separately because of the teeth structure.
Straight teeth =)

Me with braces

After having my braces for 3 years plus, i can finally remove them!!
Visited the dentist yesterday to remove the brackets, remove all the cements, polish my teeth, and to make a model for my retainer.

Now, I have to put on retainers full-time for 6 months so that my straight teeth will stay in place~

Pretty~?? XDD

P.S. I love how my teeth feels now.. All smooth n straight, but I'm still a lil bit not used to them~
P.P.S. I can loads of pretty pictures for my trip next week!! Yay~~!!!!

XOXO,
Vivian

  1. All the pain you've endured when you had braces is thrown at the background now. That's what I thought when mine was taken off a year ago. Just like you, I also thought that my mouth felt strange without the braces. It's funny, but after some days, you'll get used to it and really enjoy the beautiful set of teeth you have. It feels great, no?
